Saving Teeth in Delaware County

A Cap That Holds a Damaged Tooth Together

A dental crown is a custom cap that covers the whole tooth, holds the remaining structure together, and gives you back the shape and the bite you had before it broke. Getting dental crowns in Muncie, IN at our W McGalliard Rd office means the exam, the shaping, the scan and, in many cases, the finished ceramic crown all happen in one building.

A crown is the right answer more often than people expect. A cracked or split tooth. A back tooth with an old filling so wide there is more filling than tooth left. A tooth that has just had root canal treatment, especially a molar, where the shell that is left will split under chewing without something over the top. A bite worn flat by years of grinding. A cusp that snapped off on something harmless. A crown is also what sits on top of a dental implant and does the visible work.

Muncie runs on schedules that do not bend easily. Ball State keeps a semester clock, IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital runs shifts around it, and the employers along the McGalliard Rd retail corridor keep hours to match. A cracked molar does not care about any of that, and waiting three weeks for the one dentist in town with an opening is how a fixable tooth becomes an extraction.

That is the practical case for this office. Four dentists work here, more than at any other Bloom Dental location, and Friday mornings are treatment time rather than phones-only. More on how Bloom Dental restores teeth with crowns across all seven Indiana offices.

What Actually Happens

From the First Look to a Crown That Bites Right

The whole sequence, in order, with nothing glossed over.

Step One

Exam and imaging

We look at the tooth and image it before deciding anything. A crack that stops at the gum line and a crack that runs under it are two very different conversations, and the picture is what tells us which one you have.

Step Two

Shaping the tooth

The tooth is numbed and reduced a little on every surface so the crown has room to sit without making your bite feel tall. Old filling material and any decay come out at this point, which is often when the true state of the tooth becomes clear.

Step Three

The digital scan

A scanner replaces the tray of impression putty. It maps the shaped tooth, the teeth beside it and the way your jaws meet, which is the part that decides whether the finished crown feels like your own tooth.

Step Four

Same day, or a lab crown

Where the case allows, CEREC mills a ceramic crown here while you wait and you leave with the real thing. Otherwise the scan goes to a laboratory, you wear a temporary, and you come back to have the finished crown fitted. The dentist tells you which road you are on that day.

Step Five

Material, fit and bite check

Front teeth get tooth-colored ceramic so the crown disappears next to its neighbors. Back teeth carry more chewing load, so your dentist walks you through the trade-offs there rather than picking for you. Then the crown goes on, the bite is checked, and it is adjusted until it feels like nothing.

Worth Saying

When a crown is not the answer

A small chip on a front tooth usually needs bonding, not a crown, and we will say so. A tooth broken too far below the gum to be saved is the other end of it, and there the honest recommendation is removal followed by a dental bridge or an implant. We would rather tell you that at the exam than crown a tooth that will not hold.

Why This Office

Six Reasons Muncie Patients Choose Bloom Dental for Crowns

Four dentists in one building

The deepest bench in the group. A cracked tooth does not wait for one doctor's next opening, and a difficult case gets read by a colleague down the hall.

Friday mornings are treatment time

Clinical appointments Friday 8 AM–12 PM. For hospital shift patterns and a Ball State class schedule, that window does real work.

Same-day CEREC crowns on site

The mill is in the building, so a suitable case can start and finish in one appointment. Suitability is a clinical call made after we look at the tooth.

On the McGalliard corridor

W McGalliard Rd is the road most of Muncie is already driving, minutes from Muncie Mall. Yorktown, Daleville, Albany, Selma and Gaston get here without crossing town.

Doctor-owned, not a chain

Bloom Dental was founded by a dentist in 2019 and is still dentist-led, so the call on whether your tooth needs a crown stays with the dentist treating you.

A route if you are uninsured

We take most major carriers, and there is a Bloom Dental membership program for patients with no dental coverage at all.

Insurance, Membership and What a Crown Will Cost

Bloom Dental accepts most major carriers, including Delta Dental, Blue Cross, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, MetLife, Guardian, TeamCare, DentaQuest and Medicare. Crowns usually fall under a plan's major restorative benefit, which pays a share rather than the whole cost and counts against an annual maximum. We verify your benefit before treatment starts, so the figure we hand you in writing is the figure you pay. No coverage at all? The membership program exists for exactly that, and the financial page lays out the rest.

Common Questions

Crown Questions from Muncie and Delaware County Patients

Can I get a crown in one visit in Muncie?

Sometimes. Our W McGalliard Rd office has CEREC, which mills a ceramic crown in the building while you wait, so a single visit is possible. Whether your tooth is a candidate depends on what is left of it, where it sits in your mouth and how your bite loads it. The dentist decides that at the appointment after looking, not over the phone.

I cracked a tooth. How fast can I be seen in Muncie?

Call 765-246-8363 and say the tooth is cracked. Four dentists work at this office, which is the largest team at any Bloom Dental location, so there are four schedules to find room in rather than one. Muncie also treats patients on Friday mornings from 8 AM to 12 PM, which most of our offices do not.

How much does a dental crown cost in Muncie, IN?

It depends on the tooth, the material and whether the tooth needs anything else done first, so we do not quote a number before we look at it. After the exam you get the cost in writing with your verified insurance benefit already applied. If you have no dental coverage, ask about the Bloom Dental membership program.

Do I need a root canal before a crown?

Not always. A root canal is needed when the nerve inside the tooth is infected or dying. A crown is needed when the outside of the tooth is too broken down to hold itself together. Plenty of teeth need only one of the two. When a tooth does need root canal treatment, a back tooth is usually crowned afterward because the remaining shell is thin and prone to splitting.

How long does a dental crown last?

We do not put a number on it, because the honest answer is that the crown usually outlasts the situation around it. The crown itself does not decay, but the natural tooth underneath still can, especially right at the gum line where the crown meets the tooth. Brushing, flossing that margin and keeping your checkups is what decides how long it lasts.

I am a Ball State student and I go home between semesters. Does that work?

It usually does, and it is worth telling us at the first visit so we can plan around your calendar. If the tooth is a same day CEREC candidate the whole thing can finish before you leave town. If it needs a lab crown, we will either time the two visits inside the semester or fit the second one at another Bloom Dental office, since all seven Indiana locations share treatment records.

Will my dental insurance cover a crown?

Most plans cover crowns as a major restorative service, which usually means the plan pays a share rather than the whole thing and applies an annual maximum. Bloom Dental accepts most major carriers including Delta Dental, Blue Cross, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, MetLife, Guardian, TeamCare, DentaQuest and Medicare. We verify your specific benefit before we start so the number you are quoted is the number you pay.
