What a Crown Actually Does

The Cap That Holds a Damaged Tooth Together

A dental crown is a custom cap that covers the whole tooth, holds what is left of it together, and puts the shape and the bite back the way they were. Getting dental crowns in Indianapolis, IN at our Virginia Ave office starts with an exam and an image, because the first question is always the same one: is there enough tooth left to build on?

The tooth usually announces itself. A cusp breaks off a molar on a Friday. An old silver filling from years ago is now wider than the tooth around it. A tooth that has just had root canal treatment is hollow and brittle, and a back tooth in that state needs a crown over it before it splits. Years of grinding can wear a bite flat. A crown is also what goes on top of a dental implant, which is the part you actually see and chew with.

On materials, we keep it simple. Tooth-coloured ceramic is what goes on a tooth anyone can see when you talk. On back teeth there is a genuine trade-off between how a crown looks and how it stands up to a heavy bite, and the dentist will walk you through it at the visit instead of picking for you. Beyond CEREC, we do not make brand claims we cannot back up.

One honest thing about how long it lasts. The crown protects the tooth, but the natural tooth underneath can still decay right where the crown meets the gum. Brushing, flossing that margin and keeping your checkups are what decide the outcome, which is why we will not quote you a number of years. More on how we approach crowns and bridges across all seven Bloom Dental offices.

What Actually Happens

From the First Image to the Final Bite Check

The whole sequence, in order, with nothing glossed over.

Step One

Exam and imaging

We look at the tooth and image it to see how deep the crack runs, how much structure is left, and whether the nerve is involved. That answer changes the plan, so it comes first.

Step Two

Shaping the tooth

The tooth is numbed and reduced so the crown has room to sit over it without changing your bite. Any decay comes out at this stage, and a badly broken tooth may need a core built up first.

Step Three

The digital scan

A scanner reads the shaped tooth and the teeth around it. No tray of impression material, and no waiting to find out the impression pulled and has to be taken again.

Step Four

Same day or lab made

A same-day CEREC crown is milled in the office while you wait. A lab-made crown means a temporary now and the real one at a second visit. Which one suits your tooth is decided at the visit, not on this page.

Step Five

Fit, bite check and adjust

The crown is seated and bonded, then we check how it meets the tooth above it and adjust until it feels like nothing. A crown that sits a fraction high is the thing you notice all week, so we take this part slowly.

Worth Saying

When a crown is not the answer

A small chip on a front tooth is often a bonding job, and crowning it would remove healthy tooth for no reason. A tooth too far gone to save is the other end: there the honest recommendation is removing it and replacing it with an implant or a dental bridge. We will tell you which of the three you are looking at.

Why This Office

Six Reasons Indianapolis Patients Choose Bloom Dental for Crowns

One appointment when we can

Milling the crown here means a candidate case is finished in a single visit. On a downtown calendar full of standing meetings, the second appointment is the expensive one.

You can walk here from work

Virginia Ave in Fletcher Place, on the Cultural Trail, minutes from Mass Ave, Lucas Oil Stadium and the Eli Lilly campus to the south. Few offices in the city make a lunch hour visit this realistic.

Founder-led office

Dr. Brandt Finney started Bloom Dental in 2019 and practises here as clinical director. Dentists own and run this group, so what gets recommended is a clinical call, not an operator’s.

The whole job under one roof

CBCT imaging, digital scanning and in-house specialists are shared across the seven offices. If the tooth needs a root canal before the crown, or an implant instead, we are not sending you across town for it.

A second opinion built in

Our dentists review cases together across locations every week, so a questionable tooth is seen by more than one doctor before anyone decides between saving it and replacing it.

A route if you are uninsured

Contract and self-employed work is common downtown and often arrives without dental cover. We take most major carriers, and there is a Bloom Dental membership program if you have none.

Insurance, Membership and What a Crown Will Cost

Bloom Dental accepts most major carriers, including Delta Dental, Blue Cross, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, MetLife, Guardian, TeamCare, DentaQuest and Medicare. Most plans treat a crown as a major restorative service and pay a share of it rather than all of it, and some apply a waiting period or an annual maximum. We verify your specific benefit and give you the figure in writing before we start, so the number you are quoted is the number you pay. If you have no dental coverage, ask about the membership program.

Common Questions

Crown Questions from Downtown Indianapolis Patients

How do I know if I need a crown or just a filling?

It comes down to how much natural tooth is left. A filling sits inside a tooth that still has strong walls around it. A crown goes over the whole tooth and holds it together, which is what a cracked tooth, a broken cusp, or an old filling wider than the tooth around it actually needs. We look at the tooth, take an image, and tell you which one it is. If a small chip can be fixed with bonding instead, we will say that too.

Can I get a same-day crown at the Virginia Ave office?

Bloom Dental mills CEREC ceramic crowns in the office, so a same day crown is a real option here rather than a referral somewhere else. Whether your specific tooth is a candidate is decided at the visit, once we have looked at how much structure is left and where the tooth sits in your bite. Some cases are better served by a lab made crown, and we will tell you which yours is before we start.

How much does a dental crown cost in Indianapolis, IN?

The cost depends on the tooth, the material, and whether anything else has to be done first, such as a root canal. No honest office quotes a crown before looking at it. At the Virginia Ave office we examine the tooth and give you the figure in writing with your verified insurance benefit already applied. If you have no dental coverage, ask about the Bloom Dental membership program.

Can I fit a crown appointment around a downtown work schedule?

That is the main reason people pick this office. We are at 435 Virginia Ave in Fletcher Place, on the Indianapolis Cultural Trail, a short walk or a few minutes drive from the downtown core and the Eli Lilly campus. When a case is a same day CEREC candidate, the crown is done in one appointment instead of two, which is one work calendar conversation instead of two. Call 317-854-3772 and we will find the slot that costs you the least time.

I cracked a tooth on a Friday. What should I do?

Call the office at 317-854-3772 as early as you can. We treat Monday through Thursday from 8 AM to 5 PM, and the phones are answered on Friday, so a Friday morning call still gets you on the schedule rather than waiting out the weekend. In the meantime, chew on the other side and avoid anything hard or very hot and cold on that tooth. A cracked tooth that gets seen early is usually a simpler fix than one that has been worked on for a week.

How long will a crown last?

We do not put a number on it, because the honest answer is that it depends on you. The crown itself is strong, but the natural tooth underneath it can still decay where the crown meets the gum. Brushing, flossing around that margin, and keeping your checkups are what decide how long the crown stays put. Grinding your teeth at night matters too, and if you do, we will talk about protecting the crown.

Will my dental insurance cover a crown?

Most dental plans treat a crown as a major restorative service and pay a share of it rather than all of it, and many apply a waiting period or an annual maximum. Bloom Dental accepts most major carriers, including Delta Dental, Blue Cross, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, MetLife, Guardian, TeamCare, DentaQuest and Medicare. We verify your specific benefit before treatment starts so the figure you are quoted is the figure you pay.
