What a Root Canal Actually Does
Root canal treatment in Plainfield, IN is the procedure we use when the pulp inside a tooth — the nerve and blood supply in the middle of it — becomes infected or inflamed. We remove that tissue, clean and shape the canals it ran through, seal the space, and rebuild the top of the tooth. The point of the whole exercise is simple: stop the pain and keep the tooth you were born with.
Here is the part nobody says out loud. The reputation of this procedure is worse than the procedure. People hear the words and put it off for months, managing it with ibuprofen and chewing on the other side, and the delay is exactly what turns a tooth we could have saved into a tooth that has to come out. If you are somewhere in that stretch right now, you are the person this page is written for.
Plainfield makes the waiting worse in a specific way. Between the warehouse and logistics district on the east side, with distribution operations for Amazon, Walmart, UPS and Home Depot, and the FedEx Express hub just past town at the Indianapolis airport, an enormous number of people here work shift rotations or drive routes. Taking half a day off to sit in a waiting room in Indianapolis is not a small ask. An office on Dan Jones Rd, minutes from the I-70 interchange, is a much easier yes.
So we look at it, we tell you what we see, and we tell you honestly what your options are. Usually that is a root canal and a restoration. Occasionally a tooth is too far gone and the answer is an extraction and a replacement plan. If it is already swollen and you are in real trouble tonight, that is emergency dentistry and you should call rather than read. What Actually Happens
The Appointment, Step by Step
No mystery and no vague reassurance. Here is the whole sequence, in the order it happens.
Finding out what is wrong
We test the tooth and take an X-ray, and where the picture is complicated we use CBCT imaging. Canals branch in ways a flat image does not always show. Knowing the shape of them before we start is most of the job.
Numbing and isolating
The tooth is numbed properly before anything else, then isolated so the working area stays clean and dry. If needles or the sound of a drill are what have kept you out of a chair for years, sedation dentistry is on the table. Ask when you book, not on the day.
Cleaning and shaping the canals
The inflamed or infected pulp comes out, and the canals are cleaned, disinfected and shaped so they can be filled completely. This is the part that ends the pain, because the tissue causing it is what we are removing.
Sealing and filling
The cleaned canals are sealed so bacteria cannot move back in, and the access opening is filled. A tooth that has been sealed properly and restored properly can serve you for a very long time.
The crown on a back tooth
Molars take the load when you chew, and a treated molar is more likely to split without something over the top. That is why a back tooth usually finishes with a crown. Front teeth often do fine with a filling, and we tell you which case you are before we begin.
The next few days
Expect some tenderness for a few days, especially on biting. Over the counter pain relief is usually enough. Go easy chewing on that side until the final restoration is in, and call us if the tenderness is getting worse instead of better.
Why This Office
Six Reasons Plainfield Patients Bring a Painful Tooth Here
Dentists own it, not investors
Bloom Dental was founded in 2019 by Dr. Brandt Finney and expanded by dentists. Whether your tooth can be saved is a clinical call, and it stays with the doctor treating you.
Gentle is the word patients use
Read the reviews below and the same two words keep coming up: gentle and unhurried. For a procedure with this reputation, that is the only recommendation that counts.
Imaging and crowns in house
CBCT imaging and same-day CEREC crowns are shared across all seven Bloom Dental offices, so the diagnosis and the restoration do not depend on sending you somewhere else.
Difficult teeth stay with us
Our doctors meet weekly across locations to review cases together, and we keep specialists in house rather than referring complex work out. A tricky root usually means another opinion down the hall, not another appointment in Indianapolis.
Built around Plainfield schedules
We book Monday through Thursday, 8 AM to 5 PM, and the phones are answered Friday. If you are on a rotation at one of the distribution centers off Perry Rd or Airtech Parkway, tell us and we will find times that survive the rotation.
A path if you have no insurance
Cost is the second reason people wait, right behind dread. We take most major carriers, and for patients without coverage there is a Bloom Dental membership program. Ask before you decide to ride it out.

Insurance, Membership and What Treatment Will Cost
Bloom Dental accepts most major carriers, including Delta Dental, Blue Cross, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, MetLife, Guardian, TeamCare, DentaQuest and Medicare. What a root canal costs depends on the tooth and on whether it needs a crown afterward, so we look first and then give you the figure in writing with your verified benefit applied. If you do not carry dental coverage, ask about the membership program before you decide to wait.
Common Questions
Root Canal Questions from Plainfield and Hendricks County Patients
Does a root canal hurt?
The honest answer is that the tooth usually hurts far more in the week before the appointment than it does during it. We numb the tooth thoroughly first, and most patients tell us the visit felt a lot like having a filling done. Some tenderness for a few days afterward is normal and over the counter pain relief is usually enough for it. If dental anxiety is the reason you have been putting this off, say so when you book and ask about sedation.
How do I know if I need a root canal?
The usual signs are sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers after the source is gone, pain when you bite down, a pimple or bump on the gum near the tooth, swelling, or a tooth that has gone darker than the ones beside it. Sometimes there are no symptoms at all and it shows up on an X-ray, which is one of the better arguments for keeping up with checkups. The only way to know for certain is to have someone look at it.
How much does a root canal cost in Plainfield, IN?
It depends on which tooth it is, how many canals that tooth has, and whether it needs a crown afterward, so there is no single price we can quote before we look. We examine the tooth at our Dan Jones Rd office and then give you the figure in writing, along with what your insurance is expected to cover. If you do not carry dental insurance, ask about the Bloom Dental membership program.
Can I go back to work the same day?
Most patients go back to a normal day. Your lip and cheek stay numb for a few hours, and chewing on that side is off the table until the numbness wears off and usually for a little while after. If you are working a shift at one of the distribution centers off Perry Rd or Airtech Parkway, a later appointment tends to sit better with a physical job. Tell us what your rotation looks like and we will find a time that holds.
Will I need a crown after the root canal?
On a back tooth, usually yes. Molars and premolars take the force of chewing, and a tooth that has been hollowed out and refilled is more likely to split without something covering it. Front teeth often do fine with a filling. We tell you which category your tooth falls into before treatment starts rather than after, so the whole plan is in front of you at the beginning.
What happens if I wait?
Waiting is what turns a tooth we can save into a tooth that has to come out. An infection inside a tooth does not resolve on its own, and pain that fades is not the same thing as a problem that has gone. It can also flare into swelling at the worst possible hour. Our Plainfield office answers the phones Monday through Friday, so if you have been managing it with ibuprofen for a week, that is the week to call.
What if the tooth cannot be saved?
Then we say so plainly and talk through extraction and what would replace the tooth, whether that is an implant, a bridge or a partial. Keeping the natural tooth is usually the better answer because nothing replaces it quite as well, but it is not always possible and pretending otherwise helps nobody. You get the real picture at the exam here in Plainfield, before anything is scheduled.
