The Short Answer

Getting a Crown in Bedford Without the Drive North

A crown is a custom cap that covers the whole tooth, holds the remaining structure together and puts the shape and the bite back. Dental crowns in Bedford, IN are examined, prepped and fitted at our office on Dental Drive, which matters more than it sounds like it should: a crown is not one appointment, and every appointment you book out of town is a round trip.

State Road 37 and I-69 put Bloomington roughly twenty-five minutes north, and for a lot of restorative work that drive is treated as normal around here. It is fine once. It is less fine when a cracked molar turns into a prep visit, a fitting and a bite adjustment, all during a work week.

The teeth that need crowns in Lawrence County tend to be back teeth, and the reason is not mysterious. Quarry and mill work, the line at GM Bedford Casting Operations, trades work, a shift at Crane over in Martin County: that is a lot of load on molars, plus the clenching that comes with it. Add the long-time patients whose fillings went in twenty or thirty years ago and are now bigger than the tooth around them, and you have most of our crown and bridge work in one sentence.

Bloom Dental is doctor-owned and doctor-led, founded in 2019 by Dr. Brandt Finney and grown by dentists since. Three of them practice at this office, which is why a tooth that needs root canal treatment before its crown gets both done here rather than split between two towns.

What Actually Happens

What Getting a Crown at Our Bedford Office Involves

The whole sequence, in order, with nothing glossed over.

Step One

Exam and imaging

We look at the tooth and image it before deciding anything. Imaging is what separates a tooth that needs a crown from a tooth that needs root canal treatment first, and from a tooth that is past saving. A crack you can see is rarely the whole story.

Step Two

Shaping the tooth

The tooth is reduced slightly on all sides so the crown has room to sit without making the tooth bigger than it was. Old filling material and any decay come out at the same time. If more of the tooth is gone than the imaging suggested, we tell you then, not afterward.

Step Three

The digital scan

A scanner records the prepped tooth and the way your teeth meet. No tray of impression material, which most patients rate as the best change in dentistry in twenty years. The scan is what the crown is built from, so it has to be right before we move on.

Step Four

Same-day CEREC or a lab crown

We offer same-day CEREC crowns, milled from a ceramic block in the office. Whether your tooth is a candidate is decided at the visit, not promised beforehand.

The alternative is a lab-made crown with a temporary in between. Front teeth are restored in tooth-colored ceramic; for back teeth the dentist walks you through the trade-offs, because strength and appearance pull in different directions on a molar.

Step Five

Fit, bite check and adjustment

The crown goes on, then we check how it meets the opposing tooth and adjust until it feels like nothing. A crown that sits even slightly high is the one that aches, so this step is worth the extra minutes.

After that, the crown protects the tooth but does not make it invincible. The natural tooth underneath can still decay where the crown meets the gum, which is why brushing, flossing that margin and keeping your checkups is what decides how long it lasts.

Worth Saying

When a crown is not the answer

A small chip on an otherwise sound tooth usually calls for bonding, not a crown. Covering a healthy tooth to fix a cosmetic nick removes structure you cannot put back.

At the other end, a tooth that is broken below the gum or has lost too much bone support is not saved by capping it. In that case the honest recommendation is removing it and replacing it, either with a dental implant or a bridge, and we will say so plainly.

Why This Office

Six Reasons Bedford Patients Choose Bloom Dental for Crowns

The work stays in town

Prep, scan, fit and adjustment all happen on Dental Drive, and so does the root canal treatment if the tooth turns out to need one. Nobody schedules a half day around SR 37.

Three dentists in one building

Dr. Mohrman, Dr. Dai and Dr. Neal all practice here. For a town Bedford’s size that is unusual depth, and it is the reason a complicated molar does not become a referral.

Same equipment as the city offices

CBCT imaging, digital scanning and same-day CEREC milling are shared across all seven Bloom Dental offices. Bedford is not running a decade behind Indianapolis.

Dentists own it

Founded in 2019 by a dentist and grown by dentists. Whether your tooth needs a crown is decided by the doctor looking at it, not by a corporate production target.

A second opinion built in

Our doctors review cases together across locations every week. A borderline tooth, the kind where a crown and an extraction are both defensible, gets more than one set of eyes.

A route if you are uninsured

We take most major carriers, and there is a Bloom Dental membership program for patients without dental coverage. Ask before you assume the answer is no.

Insurance, Membership and What a Crown Will Cost

Bloom Dental accepts most major carriers, including Delta Dental, Blue Cross, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, MetLife, Guardian, TeamCare, DentaQuest and Medicare. Most plans treat a crown as a major restorative service, which usually means the plan pays a share rather than all of it, and many carry an annual maximum worth checking before December. We verify your benefit and put the cost in writing before we start, so the number you are quoted is the number you pay. If you do not carry dental insurance, ask about the membership program.

Common Questions

Crown Questions from Bedford and Lawrence County Patients

Do I have to drive to Bloomington for a crown?

No. Crowns are planned, prepared and fitted at our Dental Drive office in Bedford. That is the practical argument for having the work done here. A crown usually means an exam, the prep visit and a bite check, and for a lab made crown it means one more trip to seat it. Every one of those becomes a round trip up State Road 37 if you book somewhere else.

Can I get a same day crown at the Bedford office?

Bloom Dental offers same day CEREC crowns, which are ceramic crowns milled in the office rather than sent to a laboratory. Whether your tooth is a candidate is decided at the visit, not before it. How much healthy tooth is left, where the tooth sits in your bite and what the imaging shows all factor in. If a lab made crown is the better restoration for your tooth, we will tell you that and fit a temporary in the meantime.

How much does a dental crown cost in Bedford, IN?

It depends on the tooth, the material and whether anything has to be treated underneath first, so we do not quote a figure before we look. After the exam and imaging we give you the cost in writing, with your verified insurance benefit already applied. If you do not carry dental insurance, ask the front desk about the Bloom Dental membership program before you assume the answer is no.

I cracked a back tooth at work. Is a crown the fix?

Often, yes. Quarry, mill and plant work puts real load on the back teeth, and a cracked or split molar is one of the most common reasons a crown gets recommended in Lawrence County. A filling replaces missing tooth structure, while a crown wraps what is left and holds it together, which is what a cracked tooth actually needs. We image the tooth first, because a crack that has reached the nerve needs root canal treatment before any crown goes on.

My old fillings are bigger than the tooth around them. What now?

That is a crown conversation, and it is a common one with long time Bedford patients whose fillings went in twenty or thirty years ago. Once there is more filling than tooth, the walls that are left are thin and they eventually break under normal chewing. Replacing a large old filling with a larger new one repeats the problem. A crown covers the whole tooth instead, so the load is spread rather than wedged against a thin wall.

Will my insurance cover a dental crown?

Most dental plans treat crowns as a major restorative service, which usually means the plan pays a share rather than the whole amount, and many plans carry an annual maximum. Bloom Dental accepts most major carriers, including Delta Dental, Blue Cross, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, MetLife, Guardian, TeamCare, DentaQuest and Medicare. We verify your specific benefit before treatment starts, so the number you are quoted is the number you pay.

How long will a crown last?

We do not put a number on it, because the honest answer is that the crown itself is rarely what fails first. The natural tooth underneath can still decay where the crown meets the gum, so brushing, flossing along that margin and keeping your checkups is what decides how long it lasts. Grinding matters too. If you clench at night, tell us, because that changes what we recommend and whether you should be wearing a guard.
